How to make illegal immigration a national discussion

Hundreds of letters arrive on my computer weekly from frustrated Americans. They scream that they can’t get attention to their illegal immigration problems in their cities or places of work across this nation. Frustration, despair and worry sum up their feelings.

This past weekend, I pedaled my bike on the famous ‘TRIPLE BY PASS’ bicycle race from Evergreen, Colorado to Vail, Colorado. It includes 120 miles and three 11,000 foot passes. I about killed myself in an epic struggle to gain the finish line. I will be checking into Denver General for a quadruple by pass if I ride that race again! On the trip back from Vail the next day, the traffic by 1:00 PM was bumper to bumper all the way back to Denver. Colorado has grown by 1.3 million people in ten years. It’s bursting out of its britches. The State of Colorado is like a 500 pound obese man (our Governor Bill Owens) stuffing more hot dogs into his mouth while explaining how he’s going to use ‘smart growth,’ ‘managed growth,’ ‘slow growth,’ and ‘moderate growth,’ to solve our water crisis, sprawl crisis, gridlock and air pollution. Add more people to solve all our problems with perpetual growth so Colorado can become like California.

Where did all those people come from to overrun Colorado? Most escaped California or the East Coast. But, now, Colorado is overcrowded and growing worse. One man said as he secured his bicycle on his roof rack, "There’s not much you can do about the traffic," he said. "I guess it’s inevitable."

Balderdash! If Thomas Jefferson said the same thing, we’d still be under British rule. If Susan B. Anthony spoke the same thing, women would still be barefoot and pregnant instead of enjoying the right to vote and run for office. If Eleanor Roosevelt felt the same way, we’d still have lynchings in the South. If Dr. Martin Luther King said the same words, we’d still have separate but equal drinking fountains. How un-American can you get by resigning with, "I guess it’s inevitable." Nothing is inevitable unless you sit on your Lazy Boy and do nothing.

From a letter sent to me, "The most important threat we have in this nation right now is ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. Over 80 percent of the Americans want illegal immigration stopped. We are tired of watching the Scott Peterson trial, which makes no sense. It's ridiculous when Americans ALL ACROSS OUR NATION are faced with increased crime, language chaos, schools being overrun, states bending over financially from the high costs of TAXPAYERS having to support various programs for illegals who should be deported out of our nation. It's sickening. Diseases are being carried into our nation and anchor babies," she said.

"As citizens, we are fed up with our current administration who only PANDERS TO VOTES from the Mexicans -- and don't give a damn as to what American citizens have been asking and that is to do something SERIOUS about our open borders. If our government can only bend to the demands of Vincente Fox to stop the street sweeps, I would have to question -- WHO IS RUNNING THIS NATION? Vincente Fox or George Bush?" she finished.

So what can you do to make illegal immigration a national issue? Here’s how:

NBC is taking a poll of the issues voters feel are most important. What does that mean? It means we’re gaining traction with the networks. They will feature the hottest issues, during the next two months. To take the survey, search: today.msnbc.com. Your computer will pull up the listing for the MSNBC - Today Home Page. Click on the listing, and the NBC Today Show's Home Page appears. On the first page of that Home Page you'll see a heading "Latest Stories from the Show," and under that heading is a listing for the "What's at Stake Today" survey. Click on that, and click on "Immigration" as the issue, which is most important to you in elections today.

Write about illegal immigration is affecting you in the space provided. Talk about diseases such as TB, leprosy, Chagas, hepatitis in your schools, how your kids can’t learn with so many different languages creating chaos in their classrooms, how your hospitals are being overrun, how your grid locked city has worsened in the past decade or how crime and drugs have run rampant in your area.

Send this commentary to everyone you know on your mailing list. Over 75 percent of Americans are hooked up to the Internet. This is your chance to change the course of this national nightmare. P.S. Did I make it to the finish line of the Triple By Pass Bicycle Race? You betcha! I trained long arduous hours. I locked onto my goal at the start of the race. I saw myself crossing the finish line. The same goes for you in this immigration crisis. We will win our country by action, perseverance, tenacity, collective action, preparation and courage until we cross the finish. That's how Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Anthony, Dr. Martin Luther King, Barbara Jordan, Ike and every soldier who ever served from Valley Forge to the deserts of Iraq. We will not let them down.
